Simpson Grabs Win Over Raiders

The Southern Oregon softball team stayed winless in the preseason as they dropped a pair of games at Simpson University this past Saturday in Redding.

The Red Hawks took the opener 6-2 and then held on to win the nightcap 8-7.

Southern Oregon (0-6) returns to action next Thursday as they take part in the 11-team, 30-game SOU Invitational at U.S. Cellular Park in Medford.

In the opener, the Raiders took a 2-1 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third. Emily Matekel started the inning with a single and Kathryn Moy and Meghan Laughlin followed with run-scoring doubles to give SOU the lead.

Simpson came back to tie the game in the fifth and then scored four in the sixth and held on for the victory.

Moy led the SOU offense with a pair of hits in the opener.

In the nightcap, Simpson got a leadoff homer in the first inning and finished the frame up 5-1.

The Red Hawks were up 7-1 when the Raiders came back and tied the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning. The Raiders used singles by Laughlin, Sarah Wharton and Bailey Price and a double by Jessica Flores to fuel the rally.

In the bottom of the seventh, Simpson won the game after a runner reached on an error.

Moy had three hits for the Raiders in the second game.
