The Southern Oregon women’s basketball team displayed a brilliant overall performance as they romped to a 74-62 victory over Northwest University at McNeal Pavilion this past Friday.
The win is the Raiders second consecutive and gives them a 6-8 conference record along with a 17-8 record overall.
The win also gives Southern Oregon a solid chance of cementing a place in the Cascade Conference postseason tournament.
Northwest dropped to 9-4 record in conference play and 13-8 overall.
In a season that has seen the Raiders drop games due to lapses in defense, Southern Oregon managed to stay solid for the entire 40 minutes by posting a massive 46 defensive rebounds.
Seniors Ashley Baker and Jacki Speer led the Raiders defensively with a combined total of 22 rebounds.
“When we play with such intensity and hard defense we can beat anybody,” Head Coach Lynn Kennedy said of the team’s performance. “We talked about matching their intensity and I think we did that really well out there tonight.”
While Southern Oregon was staying strong on defense, offense was staying busy as well with SOU player Carly Wood putting in a standout performance.
Wood posted a season high of 18 points, going 4 for 5 for three pointers and 6 for 9 from the field.
Southern Oregon senior Jacki Speer led all scorers with 25 points while Northwest was paced by Emily Drivstuen.
The Raiders again relied on their proficiency from the free throw line shooting for 77.5 percent.
The win gives Southern Oregon a much needed boost before taking on Evergreen State.
The Raiders will be looking to avenge their 70-61 loss from earlier this season and further tighten their grip on a postseason spot.
