“Shutter Island”

Movie Review

“Shutter Island” is one of those movies that has way too much fun playing with your head, and does it with a level of technical expertise and precision that you allow it to do just that. Martin Scorsese generally does not make the movies that a more experimental director, like David Lynch (“Mulholland Drive”) or David Fincher (“Fight Club”) might, but here he shows he has an uncanny ability to suck his audience into the film and be entertained by its mysterious and deceptive qualities for its entire length, and possibly by the end be asking for more. Following the creative process of a famous Italian director in 60s Italy, Nine stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Guido Contini, a man troubled by his crumbling life and failing film career. Atlas Sound is the solo project of Bradford James Cox, lead singer of Deerhunter, a self described “ambient punk” band. Under the monicker Atlas Sound, he explores a different “palette of sounds” than he gets to use in his five-piece rock band, and it shows. Most of the music is made from computer or acoustic guitar loops and very simple drums, making it pretty prevalent after a couple songs that this material would be very difficult to perform live with only one person.

Lighting Bolt: “Earthly Delights”

CD Review

“Earthly Delights” is one of those poor albums where the musical formula of the material works brilliantly for maybe three tracks on the album, but fails to keep interest for the rest of the songs. There are maybe two tracks of the nine on this album that are very good; the rest are very similar to those tracks, but lack anything very special or interesting about them to make them stick out.

I know, that’s a cheesy little analogy, but it’s rather apt.
