Siskiyou Team

 ABOUT

The Siskiyou is a weekly publication produced by students of Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. The print edition of The Siskiyou began over 40 years ago and continues today. As the official student-run newspaper of SOU, the paper is published every Monday throughout the academic school year, with the exception of winter, spring and summer breaks.

Community submissions, such as letters to the editor, columns, blogs and article comments are encouraged. Over the years, the editors and staff of The Siskiyou have won numerous awards. Last year, the staff of The Siskiyou was awarded top honors from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association’s 2009 Collegiate Newspaper Contest.

HISTORY

Former editor-in-chief and commentary editor Johanna Thompson worked on getting The Siskiyou online as her capstone project during her senior year. The venture entailed a joint effort between Thompson, advisors of The Siskiyou and the team at College Media Network.

Towards the end of the 2008-2009 school year, the website was up and running thanks to Thompson’s hard work and in part due to Sean Jeter who volunteered to help design the first version of the website. This year, the editorial staff plans to embark on new territory involved in continuing the project started by Thompson.

The Siskiyou has held roughly 20 reporters and photographers every year since 2000. Currently, the team includes 15+ reporters, photographers and videographers, five editorial staff members, two advisors and one business manager.

PHILOSOPHY

The Siskiyou has two main goals when it comes to reporting news. First, we present students the events and issues of the Southern Oregon University campus, through news, features, profiles, and sports activities, as well as, the Ashland community, in an unbiased manner. Second, we provide hands-on learning opportunities for students of any major who wish to learn and develop their skills in the fields of communication, journalism and media arts. Along with covering campus news, many community events and places of interest are covered when they apply to student’s interest or concern.
