With Valentines Day approaching, it seems fitting to talk about some “L” words: love, like, lyrics, and lucky. Then, there are the lamentations of the loveless. No matter where we are on February 14, we each have our own expectations.

My expectations include dressing up with my two favorite girls and going out for some Indian food. I will cease to think about why this is another Valentine’s Day spent alone, and I will not brood over the fact that my love life is non-existent.

The weeks before Valentines Day are infamous for new couples and budding relationships. It is at this time in which a girl will take longer in the mornings to get ready, hoping that the guy in French will finally ask her out.

A guy will make more trips to the gym, hoping to bulk up for some romance. Flower orders are placed, chocolates are bought, and pink is worn shamelessly.

Sadly, there will be many without a Valentine, including myself, those who will spend Valentines Day trying to forget that very fact.

Steps for coping with being Valentine-less may include renting a bunch of romantic movies. Sitting with your friends on a coach, you each hold on to your own pint of Ben and Jerry’s. It is on this couch that you decide that true romance is only found in the movies.

In this way you are not unfortunate, but just a normal person. There is also the infamous plan of watching “Slasher” movies, going dirt biking, or getting hammered on your not-so-Valentines Day, Valentines Day. By participating in such events, one is filled with the adventure and passion that fails to exist in one’s love life.

But of course, there is the best step, which includes not celebrating Valentines Day at all. February 14 could be just another Sunday, if in fact Valentine’s Day is on Sunday.

I would not know if it is on a Sunday, because I do not have it marked on my calendar, nor do I anticipate it. But yes, that day, will come and go and there will have been no damage done. Phew.

The truth is, there is nothing wrong with living without romance 24/7.

There is so much more out there offering happiness. The sun came out today and I was filled with butterflies as if I were gushing over holding hands with a boy for the first time.

That is all we can do, find what makes us happy and damn it, soak it all in.

I remind you that I am not bitter or crazy.

I hope that those who are excited for this day will be given the opportunity to be with their loved ones.

For those less excited, may this day be equally special, no matter what plans are in store. Let your tummies be filled with truffles or ice cream. Let your glasses be filled with flowers or some strong alcohol. Most of all let everyone’s heart be filled with love and happiness.
